10 Practical Takeaways from Domopalooza 2024—and What’s in Store for 2025
Here are the top 10 things we learned, plus why Domopalooza 2025 is shaping up to be the most valuable, practical event you can attend next year.
We asked—you delivered. At Domopalooza 2024, we had a chance to sit down with attendees and ask them what practical takeaways they were taking back to their teams. From streamlining security governance to using AI tools to automate routine tasks, the people in our community shared insights driving measurable results.
Here are the top 10 things we learned, plus why Domopalooza 2025 is shaping up to be the most valuable, practical event you can attend next year.
1. Streamline security governance with PDP automation
“Today we manage over 650,000 security policies through PDP automation, part of the Domo Governance Toolkit,” shared one attendee. “It runs in real time during the day. If someone’s terminated at noon, five minutes later their security is going to be wiped out in Domo.”
Why this matters: Imagine your data lives in a mansion with hundreds of rooms. To give users access to that data, you have to lock and unlock each door by hand. That’s what managing permissions without automation is like: slow and tedious, with the potential to create costly mistakes.
By contrast, personalized data permission (PDP) automation acts to instantly lock the doors whenever someone leaves, so to speak. Your operations run smoothly, but only the right people gain access.
How to implement:
- Set up a configuration data set that defines which data sets require PDPs.
- Use Domo’s governance toolkit to automate policy updates in real time.
- Integrate PDP with employee data systems (such as Workday) for instant access changes.
2. Clean up your content with a quarterly trash takeout
“It’s just too easy to create content, so we implemented our own version of a trash bin,” explained an attendee. “We flag unused content, notify owners, and give them a chance to review it before it’s deleted.”
Why this matters: Over time, your Domo instance gets cluttered with unused content, and that clutter can create confusion and slowdowns. Just like a spring cleaning, doing a quarterly clean up ensures your team always works with relevant, up-to-date data.
How to implement:
- Use the data Domo already gives you through governance data sets and DomoStats to identify content that isn’t being used and data sets that aren’t connected to anything.
- Define your trash parameters. One attendee flagged content that hadn’t been viewed or accessed in 12 months or more.
- Notify data owners of flagged items and allow them to review the content. Send a Domo web form that owners can use to indicate which items they still need.
- Implement a quarterly review where owners can decide whether to keep or delete flagged content.
3. Use AI for simple queries to lighten the load
“Our web development team’s top questions don’t require dashboards. It’s just a simple question that a user can ask an AI agent instead,” shared an attendee.
Why this matters: Building new dashboards for every small query isn’t scalable. Using Domo’s generative AI, you can handle routine questions efficiently and keep your team focused on bigger tasks.
How to implement:
- Train your team to use AI for common, recurring queries.
- Use AI-driven queries to answer simple questions without building new dashboards.
- Monitor the impact and adjust as needed to free up your team’s time.
4. Empower your power users to become internal Domo advocates
“Rather than lock your Domo instance down so only the elite or trained have control, invite power users to be key team members,” said an attendee. “They understand how Domo works and are excited about it, so they’re naturally going to be great at selling it to others.”
Why this matters: Your colleagues who use our tools everyday will be Domo’s best advocates—people who can light the way for others and increase buy-in across the company.
How to implement:
- Identify and recognize power users (if you’re an administrator, you can use the DomoStats connector to import usage data).
- Give them specialized training and key responsibilities.
- Implement a formal recognition system to keep power users engaged.
5. Use training to reduce support needs
“Using a Domo prerequisite training for folks interested in Domo creates just enough friction that those who complete it will feel invested in using Domo well and learning what they’re doing,” an attendee shared. “It reduces support needs from the primary team, too.”
Why this matters: When users are well-trained, they can maximize Domo’s potential with less hands-on support from your core team.
How to implement:
- Offer a basic Domo training program for new users.
- Require users to complete the training before granting them full access to Domo.
- Regularly update the training to include new features and best practices.
- Use custom roles inside Domo to fine-tune who has edit access and who has more limited privileges.
6. Create certified dashboards for a trusted source of truth
“Creating certified pages and dashboards inside Domo helps users know which pages have been tested and approved by the governance team or experts who are very close to the data,” explained an attendee.
Why this matters: Certifying content in Domo identifies trusted sources of data, so everyone in your organization can be on the same page. It gives users peace of mind, because they know they can rely on the data inside the page, dashboard, or card without second-guessing its accuracy.
How to implement:
- Establish a process for vetting key dashboards.
- Make certified dashboards easy for users to find and view.
- Review and recertify dashboards regularly to maintain accuracy.
7. Keep documentation inside Domo for more efficient access
“Keep documentation in Domo with Notebook cards. Even if that isn’t the intended purpose for the feature, it’s much easier to create documentation on each page or dashboard as you go,” shared an attendee. “Then users don’t have to leave the platform to figure out how to use it.”
Why this matters: Keeping documentation in context, directly in Domo, streamlines workflows and keeps users from hunting for help outside the platform.
How to implement:
- Use Domo Notebook cards to document key features and instructions directly on dashboards.
- Ensure that documentation is regularly updated and relevant.
- Link to additional resources for more detailed information when needed.
8. Curate dashboards by user role to reduce confusion
“We created an HTML data brick card that shows users their top three pages that they visited in the last 90 days and other dashboards they should be looking at based on their role,” an attendee explained. “All the noise that we used to have around users saying they were confused on where to go has virtually gone away.”
Why this matters: When users are overwhelmed by too many dashboards, it can slow down their work. Curation helps streamline the user experience and ensures that people see the most relevant data.
How to implement:
- Use Domo’s HTML Databricks card to curate dashboards based on user roles.
- Regularly update the curated dashboards to reflect the needs of different roles.
- Ensure that each user has access only to the data that’s relevant to them.
9. Automate PII detection to ensure compliance
“We partnered with the Domo data science team to develop a PII identification and categorization algorithm,” said an attendee. “What this algorithm does is scan the data sets and identify whether the data set contains PII at the data set and column levels.”
Why this matters: Data privacy regulations are always changing. Automating personal identifiable information (PII) detection is like your data’s guard dog, always sniffing out sensitive information. It can help your organization stay compliant and protect your users’ privacy.
How to implement:
- Implement or develop a PII detection algorithm to scan for sensitive data.
- Set up regular scans to identify PII at the data set and column levels.
- Establish clear guidelines for handling data that hasn’t been viewed or access in 12 months or more.
10. Build a standards document for consistency
“Build a standards document that all participants are expected to adhere to. It can include things like naming conventions, an exception tracker, and conventions that are already in place in your Domo instance,” one attendee advised.
Why this matters: Consistency across your organization’s Domo environment reduces errors and keeps everyone on the same page.
How to implement:
- Develop a shared standards document outlining governance rules, naming conventions, and access roles.
- Make sure all users are familiar with the standards and follow them consistently.
- Update the document regularly to reflect any changes or new guidelines.
