Rome’s mayor tells Macron to chill out over ‘Emily in Paris’

Europe’s politicians are scrapping over “Emily in Paris,” with Rome’s Mayor Roberto Gualtieri needling French President Emmanuel Macron about the hit Netflix show.

“Dear Emmanuel Macron don’t worry: Emily is doing very well in Rome,” Gualtieri said on Wednesday. “And then you can’t control the heart: let’s let her choose,” he added.

Gualtieri was responding to Macron’s comments during an interview with Variety on Wednesday in which the French leader said he would “fight hard” to bring Emily back to Paris.

“Emily in Paris in Rome doesn’t make sense,” Macron said during the interview, adding that the show is “super positive in terms of attractiveness” for France.

The show, one of Netflix’s biggest hits, tells the story of American expat Emily Cooper living and working in Paris. Emily, however, is set to decamp from Paris to Rome in the next season.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter Roma on Wednesday, Gualtieri warned the French president not to “intimidate or interfere with Netflix production plans” for the next season of the show.

Gualtieri also said that he spoke about Macron’s comments with Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo and they both laughed about it.

“We see Emily’s move to Rome as a confirmation that our city is becoming more and more important, and we are quite relaxed about Netflix production decisions. They know what they are doing,” he said, adding: “To be honest, we think Mr. Macron should just relax.”
