All Dutch police officers’ contact details stolen in cyberattack

The names of all Dutch police officers have been stolen in a cyberattack, the country’s justice minister said today.

David van Weel, minister of justice and security in the Netherlands, said in a letter to the Dutch House of Representatives this afternoon that the chief of police informed him yesterday that “work-related contact details” of all police officers in the Netherlands were taken in a data breach.

It’s not yet clear exactly what details were taken, but the letter states that the hack did not affect “private data and research data.”

The police are investigating the incident and the Dutch data protection authority has been informed, van Weel said. He would provide more details to the parliament when they become available, he added.

He told the Dutch press that the government is currently assessing whether there are risks to undercover officers.
